Dr. Dobson tells the tale of a man attempting to buy the affections of a woman with a series of expensive gifts and when that failed, how he doubled down and gave her even more; but all for naught. The woman was unimpressed because he modeled all the wrong traits, particularly desperation and a lack of self-respect.
